and I'm off....

shot by Akos Major

Merry Christmas!  I'm taking a break from the blog to enjoy time with my family.  I don't say much about my faith on here (I try to keep it less personal/more design), but Christmas is so much more to me than decorations, gift giving, and even time with family......see you in 2013!

Christmas in My Home

Since last Thursday's post, my heart has been so heavy regarding the shooting in Connecticut.  Like everyone else, I can't seem to shake the tragedy and it hits even closer to home now that I have a little one.  My heart goes out to those families.
~
While you hold your loved ones a little closer this Christmas, I decided to bring to you a glimpse of the holidays in my home. (Also, many thanks to Jan at Poppytalk for featuring me here).

1. Homemade ornaments.  This was one of my favorites from this year:

2.  We have a new tradition for tree-cutting day:  homemade hot chocolate and homemade marshmellows

3.  I made half-dipped pinecones (as well as "fully dipped") this year.  I love the way they turned out!

4.  After visiting my friend Laura's house and seeing her gifts already wrapped under the tree, I was inspired to wrap mine earlier and enjoy the process (rather than my usual stressed/hurried wrapping jobs).  I hope to continue this tradition- it really does add a lot!

DIY Sleigh Bells

First off, congratulations to Mindy on winning last week's giveaway!  Thank you to everyone else for your sweet comments and interest in my blog.  It really means a lot to hear from my readers.

Secondly, I'm very excited about this little DIY that happened last week.  I have this weird nostalgia about sleigh bells, because my parent had one on the front door of their house.  As a little girl, it was one of my favorite things to hear the bells during the Christmas season as neighbors and friends came in and out of our home.  Since having my own home, I have been on the lookout for a good priced leather one, but they all started at $100.  Once again, this year I came across this one while browsing Terrain's online shop for inspiration.  It was $128 (it's since been lowered to $96).  That's how this DIY came to be- and I spent a whopping $2.50.  Not bad, right?

1.  The only thing I bought was this container of bells from my local craft store.  I used an (old) man's belt we had in the back of our closet.....I'm sure you could also find one at your local thrift store.
~
What you will need:  an old belt, wire, wire cutters, hammer & nail and/or drill  for the bigger hanging holes), twine, something to cut the leather (I used a wood chisel)

2.  I hammered a new hole close to each pre-existing belt hole.  Then I tied each bell with small pieces of wire.  I added a few more pairs of holes as needed.

3.  I liked the diagonal cut of the Terrain belt, so I did the same.  Instead of using leather pieces to hang the belt I braided twine to add texture.....but if you would like to use leather strips it would be as easy as going to your craft store.  That's it!

DIY Christmas Garland

As promised, today I'm bringing you an easy Christmas DIY.  After being inspired by this image from Rue's Holiday issue,  I decided to try my hand at a garland.  I used the (free) clippings from the Christmas tree farm where we got our tree, floral wire, and wire cutters.  Though I realize a lot of people prefer to buy faux garlands so that they don't have to bother year after year, I love the natural imperfect look of this one.  Not only that, but our house smells fantastic and it cost only $2!  This might just become a yearly tradition.
~

1. My supplies:

2.  I overlapped pieces and connected them with the floral wire.  Make sure that all pieces are going in the same direction.

3.  Once the garland is up, trim off awkward pieces, and add more branches to bare areas.  Remember, it's supposed to look organic.....not perfect:).

Stumped

Ever since I got my tree stump here, I've been seeing tons of pictures online of different ways to style/use a stump.  Although using tree stumps as side tables and coffee tables is nothing new (not that it matters), I'm finding more and more how much I love bringing nature into my house.  I love spending time outdoors with my family, so it makes sense.  Somehow bringing bits of the outdoors into my home has a calming effect on me.
Ps. I'll be back tomorrow with a Christmas DIY:).
~
 1.  This might be my favorite styling for a tree stump......three layered slices.  Mine isn't large enough, but I love this all the same.

2. Nothing new, just a beautiful room with a stump

3.  Tree stump grouping

4. White painted tree stump

Advent Calendar Round-up

If you're anything like me, you might be running behind on your Christmas to-do list.  The advent calendar adds extra pressure because it has to be up and ready by December 1st!  But, I'm determined to not rush through December by putting unnecessary deadlines on myself.  I want to allow time to be still and enjoy the special moments with my love and my little girl....even if it means things are going to be late/imperfect.  With that said, here is an advent calendar round-up for those of us who are "just moving slower".
~
1. From Rue Magazine's holiday issue, this has got to be the prettiest paper bag advent I've seen.  It's all about the styling.  (via)

2.  Simple and sweet via

3. via Terrain

4.  Create your own advent calendar, by using these free downloads (here) and using iron-on transfer paper.
